No Real Enemies

This essay was something I had to write for class and I felt that it captured my stance on the war very accurately and precisely, so here it is......

The world today is very different from the world of our parents. The world today is very different from what the world was a few years ago. The perception of safety for this country has changed dramatically. Enemies have always existed in this country, however these enemies were easily placed and defined. To go back to the dawning and birth of this country is to go back to the fundamental enemy, the enemy that led to our consequent independence, the British. To recount the events of this war would be of no importance to this short essay, however it is important to note that our independence was won because we successfully won a war. Winning a war, winning a battle, and obtaining what we originally planned on winning are a utopian vision today. No longer are we fighting an individual country but rather we are fighting a group of people who are spread out across multiple countries. Furthermore it seems more accurate to describe “our enemy” as a fundamental ideal. “Terror,” invokes images of horror, images of strife, images that are not well received in our “democratic” society. In order to combat this heinous notion of “terror” we have decided to enter an ongoing war to fight this evil force. However, as we have seen for the past several years the enemy is not clear, not well defined, and frankly hard to beat. It is hard to image a solution for ending this war without angering millions of people in this country, but this war needs to end. Civic action must be taken to end this war. This war cannot be won and prejudice and hatred will continue to rise if we continue on this same path. I ask that decisions be made to properly leave both Iraq and Afghanistan Re-shifting troops is not a viable solution, nor an ethical one.
